Weekend Horse Camping in North Georgia

October 20, 2026

The North Georgia mountains are a natural fit for a weekend with your horse. A little planning makes the trip smoother for you and your animal. This checklist covers the basics of horse camping in North Georgia.

Before you go

  • Check the rules. Public lands and private campgrounds each have their own rules on horses, trails, tie lines and fees. Confirm before you travel.
  • Paperwork. Carry a current negative Coggins test and any health certificate for each animal.
  • Practice trailering. A horse that loads and travels calmly makes the whole trip easier.
  • Know the terrain. Hilly, wet or rocky trails call for fitness and sure-footedness. Build up gradually.

What to pack

  • Water and buckets, and feed and hay for the whole trip plus extra
  • Tie lines, a highline or portable corral
  • A basic equine first-aid kit and your vet's number
  • Lights, rain gear and spare halters and lead ropes

Prepare your horse for the trail

Trails bring surprises. Practicing with tarps, flags and bridges in a safe place helps. See 25 trail obstacles every horse should master.
