Indoor Horse Activities During Bad Weather

October 13, 2026

North Georgia weather can change quickly: heavy rain, summer heat, a cold snap. When the trails are off limits, a little creativity keeps your horse working and learning. Here are indoor horse activities worth trying.

1. Groundwork

Leading, backing, yielding the hindquarters and stopping on a soft cue are all things you can practice in a small space. They improve communication and make everything under saddle easier.

2. Pole work

Ground poles help with rhythm, balance and attention to footing. Start with a single pole at a walk and add variety slowly.

3. Introducing new objects

Bad-weather days are a good chance to introduce a tarp, a flag or a pool noodle to your horse in a calm environment. See our guide to horse desensitization training in Georgia for a simple step-by-step approach.

4. Gate and pattern work

Opening, passing through and closing a gate from the saddle takes patience and precision. Add a simple pattern of turns and stops to practice transitions.

5. Try an indoor obstacle course

An indoor horse obstacle course brings many of these exercises together in one place and takes the forecast out of the equation. Our arena is covered, so event days run on the second Saturday of every month whatever the weather.

Keep it short and positive

Horses often learn more in short, relaxed sessions than in long, tiring ones. Finish when your horse has given you something good.
